In the poems â€Å"The Hunting Snake† by Judith Wright and â€Å"Pike† by Ted Hughes a strong relationship between man and nature is explored and expressed. Judith Wright was an Australian poet, environmentalist and Aboriginal land rights campaigner. Ted Hughes was an English poet and children’s book writer. Themes discussed in his poems were mostly nature having being fascinated with them from an early age. He wrote frequently of the mixture of beauty and violence in the natural world. Both poets explore the appreciation that humans have for animals therefore creating a strong connection between the two. There is however a strong disconnection that is brought on by the fear and lack of understanding of the animal world that humans have. These traits are shown through the captivation of the characters in the poems as well as a complete terror that the animals give them. We see that the characters in both poems have a deep admiration and captivation towards both animals in the poems. As well as this, the humans depict the snake as royalty as seen in Stanza 2. â€Å"Quested†, â€Å"parting grass†, â€Å"glazed† and finally, â€Å"diamond scale† all show this. Quested, meaning on a mission of some purpose could portray the snake as being a knight on a journey. This also relates to the â€Å"curves of diamond scale† which could be to demonstrate the amour that a knight would usually wear. Glazed could possibly describe the amour as being shiny. Also, the way that the grass parts only for the snake could show that it is of some importance as it moves out of the way to let it through. In the poem â€Å"Pike†, we see this admiration and view of royalty and elegance again. â€Å"Tigering† and â€Å"stunned by their own grandeur† are just some of the words the poet used to describe the magnificent creature he sees. We see that the poet could be emphasising the eminence of the pike through the use of the word grandeur (grandeur meaning regal and royal). We also see this power through the use of the word â€Å"tigering† which refers to the tiger – which in the jungle is the king of its realm. The poet also uses the names of jewels and gems to express this. For example, â€Å"gold†, â€Å"emerald† and â€Å"amber†. The dominance is also shown through the use of the quote, â€Å"a hundred feet long in their world†. This is a hyperbole as in the first stanza the poet describes them as being only 3 inches long however he sees them as so fierce that they are a hundred feet. The poet also seems to be enchanted by the bloodthirsty and predatory nature of this animal. Along with the fascination that the people have for the animals there is also a certain fear and angst towards them. Both of the animals are characterised as dark and evil. They portray the antagonist in the narrative style of poem. The human characters (who are most likely the protagonist characters) feel inferior towards these dominant creatures and have a terror for the reality that is the fact that the animals have natural weapons and killer instincts. In â€Å"Hunting Snake† the two characters do not dare move or think of what the snake is up to on its â€Å"quest†. There are a few quotes which express this feeling – â€Å"we lost breath†, â€Å"fled†, â€Å"scarcely thought†, â€Å"still as we stood†, â€Å"cold, dark and splendid† and finally, â€Å"took a deeper breath of day†. The fact that the characters lose breath when the snake is present could show that they do not want to make even the slightest sound as it may pose a threat to the snake or make it aroused. When the snake goes away however they â€Å"take a deeper breath of day†. This could show the relief that they have as they are no longer prey for the snake but it is also a moment of appreciation, not just for the fact that they are safe from the snake but also for what they have just witnessed. It is an â€Å"epiphany† moment for them as they have just witnessed something rare that they think of life differently. Flee meaning run away from a place or situation of danger expresses the. This could relate to â€Å"scarcely thought†. In this situation the characters could think that they are going to be the victims or the prey of the snake, or that they don’t want to think of the horrible torture that the prey will endure. Either way it shows that they fear the snake and its hunter instinct. The word â€Å"froze† is also used to show the fear and stillness the characters have. Freezing being a result of extreme cold – the snake is later referred to as â€Å"cold†. Cold could also mean evil, wicked, etc. Originally the poet of â€Å"Pike† shows an admiration for the pike and its murderous personality as seen in the 4th stanza. During the 7th stanza we see that the poet begins to record experiences through anecdotes. In particular, this fear is shown in these last 5 stanzas. We see the strength of the cannibalistic nature and from that strength, the unease that comes with it. For example, â€Å"one jammed past its gills down the others gullet† and â€Å"iron† – both from stanza 7. We see here the brutal attack on one another. Iron is used to show the stubbornness and power that they have as iron is a strong and fixed material. We see fear in the last 3 stanzas through the story of the fisherman. The character describes the pike as â€Å"immense† – meaning extremely large and great. However, he describes himself as â€Å"frail† – meaning weak, vulnerable and delicate. This shows the contrast between the two characters and the dominance that the animal has. We also see fear through â€Å"dared not cast† and â€Å"for what might move†. Here we see that the fisherman does not want to cast in the water as it might stir the pike. This is similar to the stillness of the two people in â€Å"Hunting Snake†. We see that the fisherman wants to see the pike as he finds it magnificent but he doesn’t want to find it as of what may happen to him. The poet also uses the word â€Å"frozen† to depict fear. This could relate back to the â€Å"Hunting Snake† as in the first stanza the word â€Å"froze† is used to represent the fear that the people have for the snake. Finally, the poet says that â€Å"darkness had freed†. The darkness represents the pike. Darkness meaning absence of light – light is purity and positivity so here we see that the pike, again, is seen as evil and wicked. Once more, this relates to â€Å"Hunting Snake† as the snake is described as â€Å"black† and â€Å"dark†. In conclusion, the humans have a strong relationship with nature both for good and for bad. They have an attraction to these creatures that brings them delight or gives them a new perspective but they also have a lack of understanding due to the fear of approaching them and observing them closely.

Barbie Doll By Marge Piercy The poem, Barbie Doll, written by Marge Piercy tells the story of a young girl growing up through the adolescence stage characterized by appearances and barbarity. The author uses imagery and fluctuating tone to describe the struggles the girl is experiencing during her teenage years, and the affects that can happen. The title of this poem is a good description of how most societies expect others, especially girls to look. Constantly, people are mocked for their appearance and expected to represent a barbie-doll-like figure. Few are blessed with this description. The female gender is positioned into the stereotype that women should be thin and beautiful. With this girl, the effects were detrimental. The first stanza describes the influence that a child is placed into during early childhood. Girls are expected to play with dolls and stoves and irons, the usual toys that relate to the old-fashioned duties of women. A young girl begins to learn what she should be for society and not to deviate from the norm. The tone used in this stanza is quite silent and simplistic at first, then takes a turn towards a more bold statement. The author uses the magic of puberty to describe the age where appearance comes into effect. It's ironic that this particular word is used because puberty is actually a stage of emotional crisis'. A hurtful remark was made towards the child, and she was described as having a big nose and fat legs. The second stanza also begins with the subdued tone mentioning the girls positive aspects, such as being healthy?intelligent?strong. These specific details are usually related to the male. Once again, the gender characteristics play as an underlying factor. These qualities were not good enough for a woman if they were not beautiful. The Binet-Simon scales were first proposed in 1905 in Paris, France and various sorts of tests have been evolving ever since. One of the important questions that always comes up regarding these tools is what are the tests really measuring? Are they measuring a persons intelligence? Their ability to perform well on standardized tests? Or just some arbitrary quantity of the persons IQ? When examining the situations around which these tests are given and the content of the tests themselves, it becomes apparent that however useful the tests may be for standardizing a groups intellectual ability, they are not a good indicator of intelligence. To issue a truly standardized test, the testing environment should be the same for everyone involved. If anything has been learned from the psychology of perception, it is clear that a persons environment has a great deal to do with their cognitive abilities. Is the light flickering? Is the paint on the walls an unsettling shade? Is the temperature too hot or too cold? Is the chair uncomfortable? Or in the worst case, do they have an illness that day? To test a persons mind, it is necessary to utilize their body in the process. If everyones body is placed in different conditions during the testing, how is it expected to get standardized results across all the subjects? Because of this assumption that everyone will perform equally independent of their environment, intelligence test scores are skewed and cannot be viewed as standardized, and definitely not as an example of a persons intelligence. But this is not all that goes into it. What about physical intelligence, conversational intelligence, social intelligence, survival intelligence, and the slew of others that go into everyday life? Why are these important traits not figured into intelligence tests? Granted, normal standardized tests certainly get predictable results where academics are concerned, but they should not be considered good indicators of general intelligence because of the glaring omissions they make in the testing process. To really gauge a persons intelligence, it would be necessary to put them through a rigorous set of real-life trials and document their performance. Otherwise the standardized IQ tests of today are testing an extremely limited quality of a persons character that can hardly be referred to as intelligence. For the sake of brevity, I will quickly mention a few other common criticisms of modern IQ tests. They have no way to compensate for cultural differences. People use different methods to solve problems. Peoples reading strategies differ. Speed is not always the best way to tackle a problem. There is often too much emphasis placed on vocabulary. The following findings were obtained: Higher vertical and horizontal permeability, injection rate and steam quality have positive effect on oil production while Lower porosity, absence of preheating period and higher injection rate have adverse effects on steam-oil ratio(SOR) . Preheating period has impact on SOR at the start of the process. In fact without preheating period the amount of SOR at the start of process is very high. Horizontal shale barrier has more negative effect on oil production than vertical shale barriers. Locating injector close to the horizontal production well has nugatory impact. The shorter the length of horizontal wells the lower the recovery of oil. This paper explains the aforementioned effects in details. Foreboding is shown because there is obviously a bad atmosphere on board, symbolising the planned mutiny of Long John Silver, and the good hands on board are of course fretting over what to do. Clouds of birds conveys to the reader the image of a deep mass of birds, and when there is a lot of something, especially animals that are making lots of noise, can strike fear in to people. This can give us an insight into what may happen later because birds are good at sensing danger, and quickly fly away if anything unsettles them. If they are very disturbed and are hanging over the ship, then surely the mutiny must be destined to happen, and the crew must have to face the wrath of Long John Silver. Through animal imagery we can get a sense of fear such as crawling on all fours when Jim is near Long John Silver and he is crouching when he has run away from Silver and does not want to be seen. This shows us what may happen later in the novel because it shows Jim is scared of Long John Silver and Silver is not really a very good person, and is planning bad things later in the novel. Agile as a monkey when used to describe Silver is showing him in a bad light, because he is deceiving everyone by hobbling around everywhere with his wooden leg, however, when he is out of view of the captain he is very quick and has lots of agility, which shows appearances can be deceptive and this confirms to us that he is planning a mutiny and other evil activities on the return leg of the journey, behind the other crew members backs. We can also get a sense of foreboding by one of the good mens reactions when he is faced with Silver and does not to be involved in the mutiny. Like a horse at the spur shows the unconverted crew member faced with Long John is very startled by the scream, and he immediately suspects Long John Silver and wants to get away because he knows Long John is starting the process of whittling down the numbers of good men on board to make the future mutiny much easier. Through the quotation crouching trees, when Jim is lost in the woods, we get a sense that Jim is trapped and is enclosed by the trees which seem alive, which is a good example of personification. This creates a sense of what may happen in the future as everything so far has had a bad feeling about it, and it can only be a matter of time before something happens. Would not the first of them who saw me wring my neck like a snipes? Fear is created by the rhetorical question and the use of animal imagery, and we feel a sense of sorrow for Jims dire situation. It gives us a premonition that later in the novel if the pirates catch Jim he will be killed straight away. We can decipher what will happen in the immediate future of the novel when Stevenson says Silverwas watching his companion like a snake about to spring. This shows Silver is a conniving, cunning creature, which will do anything to get the treasure, even kill one of his own. As well as this, in the bible, snakes are seen as evil, such as in the Garden of Eden, and people were very religious back then. Also, we now know that Tom will be killed sooner rather than later because snakes dont waste time, and once they have their target, they rarely fail, so this is a clever way of Robert Louis Stevenson building up to Long John Silver committing the murder. Fear imagery can be created using powerful adjectives and can also give us a strong sense of foreboding, through colours used, and words commonly associated with fear. In grey melancholy woods, and wild stone spires, the words grey and melancholy are commonly associated with apprehension, and we get a view to future events because the island in the readers mind is terrifying and forbidding, and Jim has to endure this to escape capture, however, bad images are everywhere, provoking the reader to imagine terrible things happening to Jim on the isle, such as his eventual capture by the pirates, and his life threatening encounter with Israel Hands, in which, he is just successful. Through the citation the outline of the Spy-glass trembled through the haze, we get fear from trembled, because not only is it an imposing land mass, it also is surrounded by a mist, and appears to move. Jim knows he must pass close to this monster of a mountain if he is to succeed on his quest, and it means he has the evil, obsessed pirates on one side, and a sinister peak in front, he is certain to encounter them on his travels, and the chances are, face the consequences. Then one horrid, long-drawn scream is an example of fear imagery because you can imagine a high pitched scream, and the reader sees him or herself in Jims position, alone on a desert island, and is also scared. The assonance of the oo and a slows down the action and gets us to feel and imagine the scream. This shows foreboding because the allies of Jims and his alliance are being whittled down, and in the future there will be only a few remaining. The novel can also show us the imminent events through the use of assonance and consonance. Assonance (the repetition of vowels) is given in should I dare to go down to the boats among those fiends, still smoking from their crime? The way the o sound is repeated many times, and how the sentence flows off the tongue, gives a constant reminder throughout the sentence of the fear that Jim faces, and the decisions he is required to make. In the future, does Jim return to the pirates in hope of a return to the ship, but face Silvers wrath, or does he journey on into the centre of the island in hope of survival, and we know that in the end, the hero Jim ends up in both of these positions, but the reader does not know this and is left guessing. To demonstrate the use of assonance, the sentence what if I returned to the boats and the fiends, still shadowed by their crimes is nowhere near as effective, and creates only a pinch of the fear found in Stevensons actual work. Assonance is also fou nd in a very obvious place. The o sound is repeated in Long John, which is terrifying, as we know he is a main character who is also very evil, and it will be a constant reminder through the future of the novel as to his plans and his traits and the threat he poses. Consonance (the repetition of consonants) can also be found frequently in chapters 13 and 14 and can show us foreboding. In only the rustle of the redescending birds and the boom of the distant surges disturbed the languor of the afternoon, the repetition of r gives the section of text a fear effect along with the good adjectives, because overall, it is speeded up, and creates more of a fast paced action. Also, the atmosphere is affected by the use of onomatopoeia in rustle and boom. Again, an insight is achieved as through the use of effective adjectives and consonance, we see that not all is well on Skeleton Island. Skeleton Island itself suggests fear, as skeletons are a symbol of death and forbidding, and you would be wise to stay away from them. Combining fear adjectives with consonance is also found in a smell ofrotting tree trunks. The use of an ellipsis shows that Jim is thinking and he must recognise the smell from somewhere before. The repetition of r along with rotting creates a sense of fear of the trees, and this is also alliteration, and Jim and the reader begin to think that the island and everything on it must be similar to the experiences here. Through repetition, Stevenson achieves fear, and allows the reader to generate a better image in their mind, as well as emphasising his point further. Of all the gloomy features of that gloomy afternoon, is an example of this. When the author/Jim repeats gloomy, it repeats the fact that the place is gloomy, which is an adjective commonly associated with darkness and fear, so it is stressing that everything is not going well. There is also time left in the day, and other bad things may happen, for instance, Jim running into a trap set by Long John Silver, or the good side being forced out of the stockade by the pirates, and this could just be the beginning. As well as all these things, the repetitions also create a sense of dà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½jà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ vu, and that people are going round in circles and they are lost, and all for the treasure, which is the main focus of the novel. Another literary technique that the author uses is alliteration. The sun still shining mercilessly. This is personification, and the consecutive letter s at the start of each word, along with an adjective that is connected with fear and evil created the illustration of the sun being evil, all seeing, and it seems to have deserted the good side, and just seems to be causing more heartache, as they lose the stockade, and the pirates get on the trail of the buried treasure. The overall theme of the chapters generates a sense of foreboding just by itself, because they are to do with pirates and a treasure hunt, and everyone knows that this kind of story is almost certain to have twists and turns later. I also think Jim how Jim goes off by himself into the forest shows he is developing from a boy into a brave young man. Through the use of colours in his writing, Stevenson also creates both a sense of fear and foreboding. Long John Silver is an example of this because Silver is a shade of grey, which is a colour associated with grim things and fear, and it shows foreboding because, if a person is named like this, he must be a character that is planning, or will partake in evil things at some point in the novel. The author also uses black I black conscience to describe Lon g John, as he can kill all these people, and not have them on his mind for the rest of his life, and not feel guilty. In conclusion, I think that the literary techniques used in chapters 13 and 14, are very effective in showing how, or giving hints as to how events may unfold in the latter stages of the novel, as they get closer to the treasure and the race hots up. As I have shown earlier I in my essay, Robert Louis Stevenson uses a great variety of different methods to get his points across, and he is very clever in using some techniques and how they foreshadow events easy to find, however, some you have to search for, and rack your brain to understand how they show foreboding, such as the use of assonance and alliteration. Example, should I dare to go down to the boats among those fiends, still smoking from their crime? Yes, the excellent adjectives help create fear which in turn introduces foreboding, but I had to search for it. My final verdict is that Robert Louis Stevenson is an immensely clever writer, and the way he gets the reader to think is amazing, and through close language analysis, we can see that chapters 13 and 14 are very clear in predicting character development and how events will pan out in the novel.
